HIV 1/2 combo test

The Determine HIV–1/2 Ag/Ab Combo test is a qualitative immunoassay for the simultaneous detection of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) p24 antigen (Ag) and antibodies (Ab) to HIV Type 1 and Type 2 (HIV-1 and HIV-2) in human serum, plasma, capillary (fingerstick) whole blood, or venipuncture.

The test is used for the early detection of HIV infection and can be useful for both screening and diagnosis:

Early detection: Allows for the detection of both the p24 antigen of HIV-1 and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2, helping with the early diagnosis of the infection, even before the body starts producing antibodies.

Monitoring and diagnosis: Used to confirm the presence of the infection and to monitor disease progression, as well as for early detection in case of potential exposure to the virus.

Versatility: Suitable for different types of biological materials (serum, plasma, capillary and venous blood), making it convenient for use in various clinical settings.

🔍 How to interpret the results?

Positive result:

A positive result indicates the presence of both the HIV-1 p24 antigen and antibodies to HIV-1 and HIV-2 in the blood, confirming the presence of the infection. In this case, the patient will need to undergo additional tests to confirm the diagnosis and determine the exact stage of the disease.

Negative result:

A negative result means that no HIV antibodies or antigen were found in the patient's blood. However, during the very early stage of infection (before antibody production), a follow-up test may be required in a few weeks.

Doubtful result:

A doubtful result may occur if the levels of antibodies or antigen are low, or if there was an error in the sample collection process. In such cases, it is recommended to retest the sample to confirm the result.
