Urea Blood Test

Renal Function and Kidney Disease Markers

Clinical significance

Urea is a product formed in the liver during the breakdown of proteins. Proteins enter our body every day through food. In the liver, they break down into building blocks (amino acids), which are then used to synthesize other proteins necessary for the body's functioning. In the process, urea is formed, which is not reused. This product is filtered out of the blood by the kidneys and excreted in urine.

As we consume and break down proteins daily, there is always a small amount of urea in the blood. However, if the kidneys are not functioning properly, urea is not eliminated from the body, and its level in the blood may rise.

Kidneys play a crucial role in maintaining human health by removing metabolic waste and harmful substances from the blood. If kidney function is impaired due to illness, these substances can accumulate in the body.

Issues with kidney function can arise from various diseases. This is why measuring urea levels (along with creatinine) is often included in a complete blood analysis.

Reference Intervals - Urea:

Serum/plasma (reference range according to Tietz) Adults (18–60 years): 2.14–7.14 mmol/L (12.9–42.8 mg/dL) Adults (60–90 years): 2.86–8.21 mmol/L (17.1–49.3 mg/dL) Infants (< 1 year): 1.43–6.78 mmol/L (8.6–40.7 mg/dL) Infant/Child: 1.79–6.43 mmol/L (10.7–38.6 mg/dL)

What to do if urea level is high?

If the urea level in the blood exceeds the norm, the doctor typically recommends making dietary changes. This may include limiting protein intake, as urea is formed during its breakdown. The doctor may also suggest increasing water intake, as it helps in the excretion of urea from the body. In some cases, prescription of medications or other measures may be necessary for effective control of urea levels and maintaining kidney health. It is important to follow the doctor's recommendations and undergo regular medical examinations to monitor changes in urea levels and the overall condition of the kidneys.

My journey back to health with Healsens. Thank you!!

That's when I turned to a nutritionist and ordered a blood test through Healsens. … Four months later, I retested. My biological age dropped to 24—nearly a decade younger than my real age.

Everything is great! Excellent app! It's very convenient for storing all your test results! The only thing I wish was that you could record blood pressure readings for both arms, as this is sometimes important for blood pressure monitoring.

A useful app. It motivates me to lead a healthy lifestyle and monitor my diet. After the test results, I decided to change my diet – I cut out flour and chocolate. I lost 2 kg in about a week. We'll see how the test results look over time.
