Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is often referred to as “bad” cholesterol. Elevated LDL levels are associated with the accumulation of cholesterol in the arterial walls, which may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis and increase cardiovascular risk.

🔍 What levels are considered optimal?

  • Less than 100 mg/dL — optimal for most individuals
  • 100–129 mg/dL — near optimal
  • 130–159 mg/dL — borderline high
  • 160–189 mg/dL — high
  • ≥190 mg/dL — very high

🔷 LDL and cardiovascular health:

LDL plays a central role in lipid metabolism, but elevated levels may lead to plaque formation in blood vessels. Over time, this can reduce blood flow and increase the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke.

↓ What does a low LDL level mean?

Lower LDL levels are generally considered favorable and are associated with lower cardiovascular risk. In most cases, reduced LDL reflects effective lipid metabolism or lifestyle factors such as diet and physical activity.

↑ What does a high LDL level mean?

Elevated LDL levels are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Higher levels may reflect dietary patterns, genetic factors, or underlying metabolic conditions.

Changes in LDL levels may take several months to become noticeable, especially when driven by lifestyle modifications such as diet and physical activity.
