Homocysteine Plasma Total

What it measures

Proteins and amino acids

Clinical significance

Doctors measure homocysteine levels as a marker associated with cardiovascular risk, as well as to help assess conditions such as homocystinuria, thrombosis, metabolic disorders, and cognitive decline. Elevated homocysteine levels are considered cytotoxic and may have a negative effect on blood vessels and cellular function.

🔍 What levels are considered optimal?

  • Levels of approximately 5–7 µmol/L are often considered optimal.
  • Levels below 10 µmol/L are generally considered favorable.
  • The reference range is typically below 15 µmol/L.

📌 Higher levels:

  • Moderate: 15–30 µmol/L
  • Intermediate: 30–100 µmol/L
  • Severe: >100 µmol/L

🔷 Homocysteine and overall health:

Homocysteine is an amino acid involved in methylation processes, which are important for DNA repair, detoxification, and cardiovascular health. Elevated levels may be associated with endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and increased risk of vascular damage.

↓ What does a lower homocysteine level mean?

Lower homocysteine levels are generally considered favorable and are often associated with adequate levels of B vitamins (especially B6, B12, and folate), which are involved in its metabolism.

↑ What does a higher homocysteine level mean?

Elevated homocysteine levels may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, thrombosis, and impaired cognitive function. They may also reflect deficiencies in B vitamins, impaired methylation processes, or underlying metabolic conditions.

Regular monitoring of homocysteine levels may help assess cardiovascular and metabolic risk and identify potential imbalances in nutrient status.

My journey back to health with Healsens. Thank you!!

That's when I turned to a nutritionist and ordered a blood test through Healsens. … Four months later, I retested. My biological age dropped to 24—nearly a decade younger than my real age.

Useful app to track analytics and 2nd opinion

It helps me track main parameters, understanding what do they mean and correlations, and make critical analysis to make preventative changes. Hope too see new fichas soon!

Everything is great! Excellent app! It's very convenient for storing all your test results! The only thing I wish was that you could record blood pressure readings for both arms, as this is sometimes important for blood pressure monitoring.

A useful app. It motivates me to lead a healthy lifestyle and monitor my diet. After the test results, I decided to change my diet – I cut out flour and chocolate. I lost 2 kg in about a week. We'll see how the test results look over time.
