VDRL Test (The venereal disease research laboratory)

What it measures

Syphilis

Clinical significance

VDRL Test — This blood test is used for screening syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. The VDRL test plays a key role in the early detection of syphilis, monitoring its treatment, and preventing complications:

Early detection: Allows for the detection of syphilis in the primary and secondary stages, helping to start treatment early and prevent disease progression.

Monitoring treatment: Assesses how successfully the infection has been eliminated with antibiotic therapy, helping the doctor evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.

Impact on public health: Helps reduce the spread of syphilis in the community through early intervention and contact tracing.

Prevention of complications: Helps avoid serious consequences, such as neurological disorders and congenital syphilis, which can occur in newborns if the mother does not treat the infection.

🔍 How to interpret test results?

RPR Titer (Rapid Plasma Reagin):

  • 1:2 — indicates a low level of syphilis antibodies in the blood, suggesting the presence of infection activity at an early stage.
  • 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — this titer is often considered non-reactive or weakly reactive, suggesting that the person may not have an active infection or may be in the very early stages of infection. In such cases, additional testing or a repeat test may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
  • Titer 1:8 and above — these values most often indicate the presence of an active syphilis infection. The higher the titer, the more likely it is that the person has syphilis, especially if it is in the primary or secondary stage.

⚠ What to do if the titer is 1:8 or higher?

If the test result shows a titer of 1:8 or higher, it may be a sign of active syphilis. In this case, it is important to immediately see a doctor for further diagnosis and treatment. The VDRL test is a screening test, and additional specific tests, such as FTA-ABS or TPPA, may be required to more accurately confirm the presence of Treponema pallidum infection.

If the titer is less than 1:8, this may indicate either the absence of active infection or a very early stage of the disease, depending on the clinical situation.

The VDRL test helps not only to detect the infection but also to monitor the treatment process and prevent its spread within the community.
