Thyroid Peroxidase antibody (TPO antibodies, Anti-TPO antibodies)

What it measures

Thyroid Function Tests

Clinical significance

The presence of TPO antibodies in your blood suggests that the cause of thyroid disease is an autoimmune disorder, such as Hashimoto's disease.

Normal values are as follows: TPO antibody: The measured serum level should be less than 9 IU/mL.

What causes TPO antibodies to rise?

High levels of TPO antibodies may be indicative of autoimmune thyroid disease. On their own, the presence of TPO antibodies does not necessarily mean hypothyroidism. Instead, Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism. In general, a positive result may mean that you have a higher chance of developing thyroid disease in the future. This is often associated with a family history of thyroid disease. Antithyroid microsomal antibodies may be seen in your blood if you have other autoimmune conditions, including: Autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

Studies show that taking 200 mcg of selenium per day may help reduce antithyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies and improve well-being in people with Hashimoto's disease.
