Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH, Anti-Müllerian) Test
What it measures
Hormone profile test
Clinical significance
An AMH test measures levels of anti-mullerian hormone. The level of AMH in the blood can help doctors estimate the number of follicles inside the ovaries, and therefore, the woman's egg count. A typical AMH level for a fertile woman is 1.0–4.0 ng/ml; under 1.0 ng/ml is considered low and indicative of a diminished ovarian reserve.
🔍 What is a normal AMH level?
- Average: Between 1.0 ng/mL to 3.0 ng/mL.
- Low: Under 1.0 ng/mL.
- Severely low: 0.4 ng/mL.
Women with higher AMH values will tend to have a better response to ovarian stimulation for IVF (in vitro fertilization), with more eggs retrieved. Women with lower AMH have lower antral follicular counts and produce a lower number of oocytes (eggs). AMH levels probably do not reflect egg quality.
Low AMH levels do not cause or indicate infertility, but more a sign that the reserve of potential eggs is lowering. Where there are fewer potential eggs in the ovaries, the chance of one developing, being released and becoming fertilised decreases.
