QuantiFERON is a laboratory test based on an Interferon-Gamma Release Assay (IGRA), used to detect latent or active tuberculosis infection (TB). While the test cannot distinguish between active and latent TB, it shows whether a person has been infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis and has developed an immune response.
π How to interpret the result?
- A positive result indicates a possible TB infection. This could be either latent or active, so your doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a chest X-ray or sputum analysis.
- A negative result means infection is unlikely, but it cannot be ruled out completely, especially if the person has symptoms consistent with TB or a weakened immune system.
What does a positive TB blood test mean?
A positive TB blood test suggests that your body has likely been exposed to TB bacteria. Most people with a positive blood test have a latent TB infection, which causes no symptoms and is not contagious β but without treatment, it can progress to active disease.
