Prostate-Specific Antigen Total (PSA total) Blood Test

What it measures

Tumor Markers

Clinical significance

The PSA test measures the level of PSA in a man's blood.

The following are some general PSA level guidelines:

0 to 2.5 ng/mL is considered safe. 2.6 to 4 ng/mL is safe in most men but talk with your doctor about other risk factors. 4.0 to 10.0 ng/mL is suspicious and might suggest the possibility of prostate cancer. 10.0 ng/mL and above is dangerous and should be discussed with your doctor immediately. It is associated with a 50% chance of having prostate cancer

In general, for men from 40 years old, it is better if PSA does not exceed 2.5 ng / ml, and for men from 50 years of age and older - 3.5 ng / ml. 4.0 to 10.0 ng/mL is suspicious and might suggest the possibility of prostate cancer (about a 25% chance, benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), or inflammation of the prostate).

A PSA score may also be considered abnormal if it rises a certain amount in a single year. For example, if your score rises more than 0.35 ng/ml in a single year, your doctor may recommend further testing.
