Albumin Blood Test (ALB)

Clinical significance

Albumin is a protein made by your liver. The serum albumin test looks at the levels of albumin in a person's blood. If the results indicate an abnormal amount of albumin, it may suggest a problem with the liver or kidneys. It may also indicate that a person has a nutrient deficiency.

🔍 What is a normal serum albumin level?

  • 3.4 to 5.4 g/dL (34 to 54 g/L) is the normal range. Normal value ranges may vary slightly among different laboratories.

↓ What does a lower albumin level mean?

If you have a lower albumin level, you may have malnutrition. It can also mean that you have liver disease or an inflammatory disease. When the level of protein in the blood is low, water may leave the blood vessels and collect in the tissues. Water in the tissues is called "edema". Critically ill patients develop edema for many reasons. A low albumin level can cause edema or increase the amount of edema from other causes. Foods with a lot of protein, including nuts, eggs, and dairy products, are all good choices to raise your albumin levels. If you drink alcohol, your doctor may recommend that you drink less or stop drinking. Drinking alcohol can lower your blood protein levels and make your symptoms worse.

↑ What does a high albumin level mean?

Higher albumin levels may be caused by acute infections, burns, and stress from surgery or a heart attack. You may be able to reduce the amount of albumin in your urine by taking medicines that lower blood pressure called ACE inhibitors or ARBs. The names of these medicines end in -pril or -sartan. Meet with a dietitian who can help you plan meals and change your eating habits.
