Omega 3 -6 index

What it measures

Lipids Blood Tests

Clinical significance

The Omega-3 Index measures the amount of EPA and DHA in red blood cell membranes and serves as a marker of omega-3 status.

πŸ” What is a normal Omega-3 Index?

  • An optimal omega-3 index is greater than 8%.
  • An intermediate omega-3 index ranges from 4% to 8%.
  • A low omega-3 index is less than 4%.

How do you know if your omega-3 is low?

  • Dry Skin: Insufficient omega-3s may contribute to dry, flaky skin.
  • Joint Pain: Omega-3s play a role in reducing inflammation. A deficiency may result in joint discomfort.
  • Mood Swings: Omega-3s are linked to mental well-being, and their lack may contribute to mood swings or depression.
  • Increased Belly Fat: Missing out on omega-3s may lead to the accumulation of belly fat. This challenges the myth that eating fat leads to weight gain, especially when consuming healthy fats such as those found in fish, olive oil, avocados, and nuts.

Is the Omega-3 Index a reliable biomarker?

While the omega-3 index is a reliable marker for assessing omega-3 status in general, it's important to note that there are other factors to consider when evaluating the impact of omega-3s on specific health outcomes. For example, the plasma BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor)ΒΉ has been shown to be a more reliable biomarker than the erythrocyte omega-3 index when assessing the effectiveness of omega-3 supplements in brain health (Sugasini et al., 2020).

Additionally, research indicates that higher levels of DHA in plasma phospholipids are associated with a more favorable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk profile, including lower BMI and waist circumference, as well as better triglyceride and HDL-C levels. On the other hand, higher levels of DPA (Docosapentaenoic Acid) have been linked to a less favorable CVD risk profile (Garneau et al., 2013)Β².

In summary, while the Omega-3 Index is a useful tool for assessing overall omega-3 status, it should be complemented by other biomarkers, particularly when assessing brain or cardiovascular health.

My journey back to health with Healsens. Thank you!!

That's when I turned to a nutritionist and ordered a blood test through Healsens. … Four months later, I retested. My biological age dropped to 24β€”nearly a decade younger than my real age.

Useful app to track analytics and 2nd opinion

It helps me track main parameters, understanding what do they mean and correlations, and make critical analysis to make preventative changes. Hope too see new fichas soon!

Everything is great! Excellent app! It's very convenient for storing all your test results! The only thing I wish was that you could record blood pressure readings for both arms, as this is sometimes important for blood pressure monitoring.

A useful app. It motivates me to lead a healthy lifestyle and monitor my diet. After the test results, I decided to change my diet – I cut out flour and chocolate. I lost 2 kg in about a week. We'll see how the test results look over time.
