For example, the plasma BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor)ΒΉ has been shown to be a more reliable biomarker than the erythrocyte omega-3 index when assessing the effectiveness of omega-3 supplements in brain health (Sugasini et al., 2020).
Additionally, research indicates that higher levels of DHA in plasma phospholipids are associated with a more favorable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk profile, including lower BMI and waist circumference, as well as better triglyceride and HDL-C levels. On the other hand, higher levels of DPA (Docosapentaenoic Acid) have been linked to a less favorable CVD risk profile (Garneau et al., 2013)Β².
